Covington, a small town in Oklahoma, is where UV resident, Joy Thornburgh was born and raised along with her 5 siblings. Joy was 9 years old when her father passed away. She finished school in 1946, and was introduced to her husband to be, Patrick, by her best friend Wanda. Patrick was a Marine Corp Vet just home from WWII. During that time they went on lots of dates, to dances, hockey games and parties. They were married and stayed married for close to 70 years. It brought both of them a lot of joy to be active members of Olivet Baptist Church where they were greeters and choir members. Joy was also in the Tulsa Bicycle Club, and rode across parts of Texas, Kansas, and Oklahoma. In the 1960’s they lived in Tripoli, Libya for 5 years, in Mersiu, Turkey for 2 years and London for 1 year. Her husband’s passing in 2016 made a big difference in her life, so she decided to move to University Village which was a simple decision since her oldest sister, Fern, lived here for a few years before her passing at age 102. Joy knew UV was where she would love to be and her 2 daughters, Pamela and Janice, took care of all the details of her move. Joy jumped in right away enjoying the concerts, Wii bowling, choir, exercise classes, Readers Theater, movies and encouraging others to get involved.
Joy believes life is about making memories! She says, “I have loved our travels, home, children, serving, painting, singing & writing poetry about our children. Most of all, I love God, His creation and His people. This is all people need to know about me!”
