Setting Goals In Late Adulthood

December 4, 2020

During the retirement years is a great time to set some goals due to the increased level of freedom, and decreased level of responsibilities. Sometimes, though, with out a lot of structure to daily routines, it can be challenging to get started on something new and keep that momentum going. Here are some tips, according to the Institute On Aging for setting goals in late adulthood:

Purpose: First, establish your purpose and set one goal at a time. Ask yourself, “What am I passionate about?” Or, “What can I do to benefit others?” Clarifying the purpose for yourself is vital to get you to the end result.

Expectations: An important piece of forming your goal is selecting something that matches your abilities and is realistic. The last thing you want to do is pick something that sets you up for failure and discourages you from trying again. Before you get started, figure out if there is a realistic pathway to get where you want to go.

Smaller Steps: Setting a goal can sometimes be overwhelming, so it’s important to break it down into smaller mini-goals. It’s a great feeling to check things off a list, and when you have smaller, easier pieces, it makes the bigger goal seem more manageable.

Motivation: One great way to stay motivated is to get some accountability. Finding a friend our loved one who is willing to ask you about movement towards accomplishing your goal is a great way to make sure you do it. Who wants to say, “No, I didn’t do anything today”?

Resources: Before you get started on the steps for your goal, do some calculating to find out if you will need a certain amount of resources. Lack of resources might create a barrier, and it would be a heartbreaking thing to get far down the road and hit a roadblock. Planning is key!
